Fathi Hassan

Fathi Hassan, was born in Cairo in 1957, to Sudanese and Egyptian parents. In the mid-80s he won a grant to study at the Art School of Naples and has remained in Italy since. His Nubian influences comes through in the textures, symbols and calligraphy that he uses “to explore the space between graphic symbolism and literal meaning.” Through his invented, Kufic inspired script, he experiments with the written and spoken word and the erosion of ancient languages following colonial rule.

Over the last 30 years he has exhibited worldwide, with a series of recent shows curated by Rose Issa Projects
